TV shows portraying important messages

I don’t know if any of my fellow class mates watch 24, but it has been brought to my attention that they actually show similarities in the fictional government of 24 and the current Bush government.  It ’secretly’ explains the Bush government playing off its failures.  I found this very cleaver, because I feel like Tv no longer is simply just to relax but that some shows are actually trying to convey an important message.  Another show that recently started doing this was the O.C.  I must admit I use to be a huge O.C. fan but have stopped watching it because well lets face it…it is terrible now.  But one thing I noticed is that this year, they too actually tried to convey a message.  They brought up the topic of global warming.  Many of the episodes brought up were of the environment and the lack of importance we seem to place on it.  And it ended with a horrible earthquake to show the changes of global warming.  I guess what I am trying to say is that I find it very interesting how common TV shows designed for pure entertainment are now trying to take initiative to educate people in matters that the producers find important.  Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I don’t know…you tell me!

I think Tv shows have always taken from real-life events to get viewers to see things in a certain light. The news is not the only place to find current events. The only difference is in the way one can clearly see the agenda behind these types of subplot interjections; being either a cheap shot at the goverment or a way to feel they truly care about the environment in a show that hypes overconsumption and greed.

The job of the writers is to make the show interesting enough to keep viewers and open enough to get new ones. The way the OC possibly tried to preach environmentalism was nothing more than a ploy to have the viewers see the show as more caring and to stop naysayers from repeatedly commenting on the show as being unrelatable and unconscious about any real issues. Talk about Global issues while still worrying about the inane problems they face each week.
